Used to describe the prospect of some impending calamity

And before you go off you your well-worn homespun s**te on the lines of 'well maybe it's just me, but it's only football, I don't understand why people get so worked up about it, the sun will still rise tomorrow', getting relegated to the third tier for the first time on fifty years IS a calamity for NCFC - for reasons of finance, pride, player recruitment, fan base and many other reasons.

So no, it is NOT over the top to say that City are staring into the abyss
