The dodgy dll was in a system folder

And not a system32 folder.

I went back to dos and ran some seaches to find the time stamps of the files which helped.

The problem he had today was that he could hit some websites, including gmail which I tried and failed to access, but I didn't realise what had caused the issue - hence the original post.

It's a virus nasty or trojan and Macafee didn't managed to zap it.
