I liked how the Observer described it

"Do I really want to commit the next few months watching this?" The answer is, yes, honestly, you do. The Wire might appear convoluted but a good part of its powerlies in the way in which it doesn't spoon feed it's audience. This is the world the characters live in, we are told, hang out for a time (poi), you'll pick up what's going on. It's a refreshingly adult way of treating television fans and ultimately what makes The Wire so addictive.
