That minty thing just sounded like sexual tension/flirting between two people, which sounded like it was waiting for a fall out in the confusion (I've kind of been in the same situation with someone I was happy being mates with, but that just made them act more neurotic around me until I tired of it and walked away)

My best mate is a girl, and after 13 years I've never thought or considered giving her fanny a name, I guess having respect for my friends has had something to do with it :)
