because we spent too much on players

and for whatever reason those players didn't work out.

As for financial incompetence, most teams of similar size in a similar situation to us (i.e relegated, having lost Prem parachute payments blah blah) got into a far worse financial position - Coventry, Southampton, Ipswich, Leicester. Watford and Charlton are in a far worse financial situation now and they still have the parachute payments.

It isn't the Board's fault they they aren't rich enough to be big players in the ludicrously expensive world of modern football, and it isn't incompetence.

Our playing wage bill is one of the ten highest in the division, which means there are a fair old few teams doing better than us while spending less on players. That is what we have to do - become a better team (which is 6 parts good judgement and 6 parts good luck) while spending less on players.

Sure it would be easier if we had a loaded sugar daddy but we don't have a right to one and right now we don't have one. So we have to make better use of what resources we have.
