My esteemed father in law had a decade or so as an inventor

He's a mechanical engineer. Some things he invented were pretty good and made him a bit of money, like some contraption for regulating the amount of animal feed dished out to a chicken in Chicken Auschwitz. But he looks back on it all with regret because at the end of his inventing career he thought up, but only patented for one year (because it was so expensive), the 'wine box' idea. After a few glasses of port he will tell you the story himself, in loving detail, even if you've heard it 37 times already.
