Old trick I learnt in my kitchen days.

Rub a freshly cut lemon on your fingers, and then wash them. Something in the citric acid breaks down the nasties in the garlic. This also works particularly well if you've been working with raw fish (I once had to head, tail, gut and fillet about 250 mackrels in an afternoon. You don't shift the stink of that easily.)
