CAD jockeys around? Is there a decent open-source package for mechanical design out there?

I'm a Catia V5 user, but I'm working on a potential open-source project, and I've been asked to recommend CAD software for developers to use. And yes, I have GIYLFed it and downloaded a couple, but if anyone has hands-on experience, I'd appreciate their input.
