I can't really say he's defending him...his said the opposite...

it's a good point that it shouldn't let it cover all the cracks that appeared after his mistake. Teams that have won world cups have sometimes included dodgy keepers that have even made rash mistakes in games but the team has been good enough to comeback and win the game still...your keeper making a mistake should inspire you on to win the game and make your team-mate forget about it - not crumble into a total mess and shambles and produce a great comedy video for the managers of England's rivals in 2006 to expose.
