I see that some do ok and some don't

As I said above, Southampton have been run in to the ground and Watford are serial lurchers.

And I'm certainly not prepared to accept that finishing in the bottom half of the Championship 10 times in the last 14 seasons is a malaise that can be laid at the door of the current state of football finance.
