I actually think its a very good movie made at the right time ,with India becoming a major influence in that part of the world it shows indian culture how it really is the incredibly rich against the impossibly poor
and how the country is divided on cultral and economic levels

My understanding is that alot of India don't like it but not many cultures like it when a mirror is put up against it and they see the reflection

And the bird ain't bad either ! when she grows up off course
