I thought Saturday summed up perfectly why City will be relegated this season. An decent enough performance in patches, some possession, but next to zero up front and some nervous defending which doesn?t fill me with any confidence at all for the run in. We had a good few minutes after the goal, could have gone two up and didn?t ? it was our chance to take a stranglehold on the game and we failed.
I was amazed when we scored as almost nothing had happened before the goal. There didn?t seem to be much interest from the players or the crowd before we took the lead. I was just thankful we had scored, and it was the first goal of the game. I wouldn?t have fancied another afternoon watching City labouring around trying to chase the game.
What worries me more (and this in part prompted some of the frustration is the crowd in my view) is that this is the third game where we have been in with a shout of winning and we?ve not been positive enough and gone for the win. The other two games being the Doncaster away game where we took our foot of the gas in the last fifteen minutes or so and the 2-2 draw with Southampton ? those two points lost could end up costing us dearly. We nearly paid for this approach again when Eagles fell over shooting in the last minute.
Also we seem a very easy team to play against. We had no pace up front, so Burnley pushed up and denied us space in midfield, confident that no-one would run in behind them. They constantly kicked our two most creative players, Croft and Wes (I?d like to know how many times they were fouled between them ? maybe 15 in total), and that was about all they had to do.
We need a win next Saturday, but if I was a betting man I?d stick my cash on another frustrating draw.
