But it's new, and being a penny-pinching Scot I don't like being new cars.

What I am learning about country life is that you are more affected by the weather than in London. The main roads are the same, but going anywhere seems to involve some miles on teeny little country roads, and in heavy rain they have huge puddles, in ice they don't get gritted, and so on. The Mini has these low profile slick tyres which look like a lick of black paint round the wheel - all very well for looks, but not hugely grippy in rain/ice.

So not sure that the Alfa would have sufficient ruggedness, if that's a word.
