Hiring the 'cheap' option, not new for us is it? Neither is the worrying.

Promoting from within is something we've done for a while, both before and during my time with varying success.

Deehan -Failure
Megson - Failure
Hamilton - Failure

All 3 of those had tough circumstances though and megson has done ok-ish elsewhere. Of course, we have simialr tough circumstances now.

Balance that with:
Worthy - Success (Cardiff and champions, that's success despite the drastic tail off)
Walker - Success
The next 2 are kinda before my time (certainly in terms of really knowing the management team etc)
Stringer - Success
Brown - Success
I'm sure at least 1 of those was considered a 'cheap' appointment at the time. Happy to be corrected on either if they were not prmotoed from within, i've not researched this as usual!

So promoting from within (or taking the cheap option) is not new for us, (neither is the reaction) and its by no way a guarantee of sucess or failure.
However it can work, and has worked.

THe key for me will be the same as it was for Worthy. We had Roberts on norfolk telling us the players wnated worthy full time, so i backed him. If the players have simialr feeling towards Gunn now, then it'll work.
