Confirmation of the punishment for stealing from charities

A former employee of a Coram-based handicapped-advocacy charity was sentenced Friday to 5 years' probation and ordered to pay back 6,000 pounds prosecutors said she stole from the group.

Sverna Bradley, a former coordinator of volunteers at Suffolk Independent Living Organization, took the cash from bingo games in 2006, Suffolk County prosecutors said. She pleaded guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny in November before Suffolk County Judge Stephen Braslow.

Bradley, who resigned in November 2006, attempted to cover her tracks with falsified reports, prosecutors said. Prosecutors initially charged Bradley with stealing more than 12,000 pounds from the charity but later reduced the settlement.
