A perfectly reasonable explanation might be ?

That she has Coeliac disease, which is an intolerance to Gluten. My daughter was diagnosed at 15 months, after she lost 4 pounds in weight in three months. It was a very worrying time for us until we knew what the problem was.

For adults it is common to be diagnosed at around 35 years old, (not sure why this is).

A quick GIYLF of "victoria beckham" & coeliac returns quite a few results, all mostly rumours though.
