From personal experience...

With an ipod, what you lose in functionality, you gain in reliability.

Not sure if 'functionality' is the right word really, but with iRiver and Creative mp3 players, you can plug them into any computer and they pick up as an external drive, which meant you could just drag and drop things onto it.

Now, you can't do that with an ipod...well, you probably can if you do some special jiggery pokery with it, but if not, you are stuck with putting stuff onto it using itunes or similar software (I use winamp).

Anyhoo...I had 3 irivers, the hard drive failed on all of them, same with the 4 creatives I had. Maybe I'm just unlucky? Maybe I shouldn't use them to stir my tea? I dunno, but the ipod has lasted me 2 years now and hasn't caused a fuss.
