The fact that it is difficult to achieve ideals does not mean that one should abandon the

attempt

The UN was born, I think, as a result of (yes) WW2. The leaders of the most powerful nations were so appalled that within 20 years of the end of WW1 the great powers were at each others throats again that they decided to try some new institution, to see if they could stop it.

Now, it is true that there remains a horrific amount of conflict across the world. But it is also true that western Europe has enjoyed the longest period of peace in its history, and that none of the great powers has fought a war directly against another. So there is some progress.
