You've transcoded (converted) it to dvd format

The original (avi?) format is designed to be compact, whereas DVDs of equivalent quality are much bigger. You would need to find a way of converting it in lower quality as Dr Baker said. Dual layer DVDs are an option but IMHO you're much better finding a way to fit it onto a single DVD. TBH any decent conversion program should have an option to fit it onto DVD, unfortunately I don't know any well enough to recommend
