Fr?d?ric Thiriez presented the encouraging results of UEFA's first trials of five-person refereeing teams conducted in Slovenia and then in Hungary. According to Michel Platini, this mode of refereeing has two principal advantages: a deterrent effect for players in the penalty area and freeing up of the assistant referees to concentrate on the off-side line. The next trial will take place in Cyprus from the 22nd to the 27th of November. A delegation of the Refereeing Task Force will be present for the occasion. The LFP President noted that having five match officials would work hand in hand with the use of video footage in decision making, as while the extra match officials would help in the fight against professional fouls in the penalty area, the problem of whether the ball has crossed the goal line would remain.
