Nikon are the only real affordable choices for dedicated 35mm scanners.
The Coolscan V Ed is fine but if you want to be able to batch scan you'll need the Super Coolscan 5000 and the optional slidefeeder.
If quality is not the main issue my Epson flatbed (perfection 4990 photo) does a more than passable job of scanning slides (up to 4000 dpi) 8 up using the supplied adaptor - and at ?200 it's a fraction fo the price of the Nikon's.
If you can afford it go for the 5000... if your credit's crunched go for the Epson.
