It's not just "left-to-right", it's BODMAS, left-to-right.

1: Brackets
2: Order
3: Division
4: Multiplication
5: Addition
6: Subtraction

with the rule that Division and Multiplication are of equal precedence (and therefore, you perform equal-precedence operations "left-to-right") as are Addition and Subtraction. You don't to addition first and then subraction, because if you did 5 - 2 + 3 would equal 0, which is nonsense, it's 6.
