Martin O'Neill would have succeeded.

We were 2nd when he left if I remember rightly. I remember seeing us win 2-0 at Molineux and 4-1 at West Brom in that short period he was in charge. It was brilliant because, as he's shown everywhere he has managed, he is a magnificent motivator of players.
