Unfortunately, centre back is a position players tend to grow into, and I get the impression that having seen him actually play, Roeder is now reluctant to put a young lad up against big, strong, bullying bastards like Hulse, Ellington and Villa who will kick the crap out of him and shove him around the pitch.
