is a class thing - particular type of (probably white) suburban middle-class mum, who drives her kids to soccer classes in the family SUV.

Point being that inner-city working class kids don't play soccer.

I think hockey mum refers to a more working class, rust-belt variant - Northern states where kids play hockey rather than soccer likely to be less affluent, less middle-class etc.
