Pinebanks original owner John Taylor, lived in nearby Walpole House on the Yarmouth Road, he acquired the 11-acre site between 1870-74, on which he built the Pine Banks house.
John Taylor was a keen chess player. On a visit to Hawaii John met with Queen Kapiolani who was believed to be a chess enthusiast

In 1887 for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, Queen Kapiolani of Hawaii visited the Pine Banks tower. The occasion is recorded in an engraved stone, set in the fabric of one of the tower walls.

Taylor died in 1890. Several owners came and went until Thomas Jarrold, of the long-established printing family purchased the property in 1919 for ?5000.

In 1953 Norwich Union bought the estate, during the same year (June 13) a Garden party was held. Cricket, Bowls and Rowing were among the activities. Lady Bignold declared the garden party open, with an estimated 800 people in attendance.

Today Pinebanks is the home to a wide ranging group of members and users.
