Delays

It's good to see in this mercenary world that a simple tug on the heart-strings is enough to persuade some people to make the right decision.

That's what Frank Lampard said was the deciding factor in the signing of his new contract, that conservative estimates suggest is worth an average of ?130,000 a week, and not so conservative around ?151,000.

For it wasn't the readies, but more the admittedly very nice gesture made by Chelsea's players during their 2-1 win over Manchester United last season, when they paid tribute to Lampard's recently deceased mother.

Lampard said: "I sat and watched that game with my family and what they did there, it was a very emotional moment. I will never forget it.

"When you go to your mum's funeral you don't expect all the players to be there, you might expect a representative from the club. But I had all the lads there.

"That's something that goes beyond football and shows you what real men are and what real friendships are.

"You don't want to leave those lads or lose those lads, they'll always be close to my heart because of that and I'm very happy to stay among them."

Very touching Frank, but the the game you mention was on April 26.

So if it was the cameraderie and your kind-hearted teammates that tipped the balance for you on that ?39million contract, what the hell have you been doing for the past four months?

The Real Scoop - Part Two
Only a few weeks ago, it looked for all the world like Frank Lampard was going to turn his nose up at the contract offered by Chelsea and rapidly do one in the direction of Milan.

So what changed his mind? The papers seem to think it was something to do with money, or length of contract, and you've already read what Mr Lampard had to say, but your intrepid Mediawatch has uncovered the real reason.

For advertised boldly on the club's website on Wednesday afternoon was the opening of a new addition to the Chelsea Village.

It's a diner that apparently offers 'an array of Italian cuisine, including pizza and pasta dishes, as well as meat dishes such as burgers and steaks'.

The name of this bistro? Frankie's.
