The Premiership

and the resulting two-tier status, has now created a situation where survival is the ultimate goal.

A good side can get promoted but it will have to be rebuilt to survive in the Prem.
This rebuilding will see an explosion in costs and could upset much of the team-spirit previously generated.
And even if a side survives the first season then the second season is always tough as the better players disappear off to bigger clubs.

Even if you do a Watford (use virtually none of the Sky money on players AND sell your biggest asset) there is no guarantee of recreating that successful formula.

People fail to realise that only Man Utd & Arsenal generate profits in football (and watch out as the Highbury development goes tits up and lands AFC with serious problems). Everyone else will find a way to spend IT ALL, either on Johnny Kickaball's fabulous wages/transfer fees, a new stand with centrally-heated seats or a spanking new goldfish tank for reception.

I would dare to suggest that the Boards of Watford and Soton were wholly aware of the pitfalls of spending too much of the Sky money - that both of them appear to be so busted now should tell its own story.
