personally i'd go for Mares, Apeks,Aqualung or Beuchat. The dodgy thing a while back was Apeks XTX. It was an isolated manufacturing fault. Around 50 sets were affected, but they were caught pretty much before they left the factory. Apeks have the best reputation and deservedly so. Jane's Apeks she's had since the first generation ATX 100 and they still breathe almost as good as any i've used. What is worth knowing though is these helpful facts,

Beuchat make regs for Mares and Tusa.
Aqualung make regs for Apeks.
Scubapro and Oceanic (both the same company) are s**te, really seriously don't use them.

Basically if you want some good regs at a lower price then go for either Beuchat or Aqualung. Mares are nice but you are only paying for the name as with Apeks (I got mine dirt cheap when i took the service course). My Apeks I use for teaching but I have a set of Aqualung Titan for my own recreational use.
