It ended up being one of the witnesses.

The guy who saw her throw a fag at a petrol station was actually following her in order to kill her as she'd witnessed him murder someone the same night (the other killing that had been referenced in the first episode). It all fit together quite snugly, though I thought they rushed that last epsiode a bit.
