Preston itself is pretty decent, good shops and pubs. Also the Harris Museum and Avenham park are right in the centre to give a bit of variety to your day. The Footy museum is free and decent way to pass an hour or so as well.
It gets pretty lively at weekends, much better than Blackpool.

This time of year though, Lytham (12 miles from Preston) is fantastic. Great views, great pubs and places to eat . I def recommend a trip there, easy to get to on train, bus or driving.
