First, I'm going to say that we might be able to use an upgrade at centre-half, but it's far from the open-and-shut case you're making it. Why not get a new keeper while we're at it? Greeno must be crap now too, eh?

To blame our back four entirely for the defensive record last year shows utter tactical naivety. No, they didn't always defend well. Yes, there were some shocking indivdual performances. I'm firmly of the opinion that our midfield is as much to blame though. If the midfield backs off continually, the defence gets pushed back/and or overrun. It's not that simple, but I don't want to write a thesis here.

What we need, now more than ever, are solid midfielders. Look at the difference Safri made. Put two Safri style players in there and we'd have suddenly become a lot tighter at the back. We didn't because Francis was in stroll mode by the time Safri got picked. Safri and Jarrett might work in that respect, but we have no cover. I maintain midfield has a far greater need of reinforcement than defence.
