message for Ben or any other IT minded person

My lad is building a website for our local boys team and wants to put a message board on it for him and his mates to use. I have been told that you can use message board suppliers like bravenet etc is this how WOTB is done or did you build the board yourself?
Any advice would be very helpful as this will form part of his school IT work.
