Bad PR yes but also right for Footballing reasons,
As GR said from January he would not make any decisions on players and contract renewals until after we were safe.
If the players had performed that bit better or (more appositely) if we had had better referees for several games (Bristol City away for example) this would have been settled a lot earlier and would have been known prior to the QPR game.
As Sheffield Weds were not safe on the last day of the Season an announcement of what even the category 1 fans had accepted as inevitable would have been unfair to the other clubs battling relegation as it was we fell apart as soon as Dublin left the field. - With two heroes to say goodbye to the effect would have been more profound.
Everyone seems to have forgotten that in January 2007 Hucks was the one who turned down the clubs offer of a two year contract stating that at his age he felt that he only had one more year of football at this level left, I believe that he even turned down having an inbuilt option in the contract.
There is no doubt that he will be missed but with a preference for playing just one winger and Croft/Chadwick being already contracted for next Season GR has options already, granted neither are matchwinners but both are arguably better team players.
Hucks does have an Injury that GR says he did not know about (even though if he had signed up to WOTB or the Pinkun he would have known about it!) and is used as a rent a quote by the press. Next season will be hard with or without him but GR needs all the players to pull together without the odd casual snipe from a prima donna causing unrest.
I am sure that if there is a way there will be some sort of a farewell for him - it will all depend on where he is playing next Season. -
Ultimately, apart from Iwan and Drury who has yet to leave, all of the players who won the championship in 2004 have departed without saying farewell and there are other legends in there too, Greeno, Malky, Eddy, Gary Holt even Svenson and Mackenzie...perhaps some sort of greatest ever event would do it.
