That Johnny Vegas thread

Quite a foo years ago when I was young enough to be able to attend trendy places without having to suppress the urge to t**t everyone else in the room - and to give you an idea of how long ago this was, the Thing of The Moment was Acid House - I witnessed a Shock DJ who, between spinnin' discs, gave a raucous and plebby comic act.

At first he was really funny though very base: but when one girl started to become upset at his taunts he really started to turn on her, making her more and more uncomfortable. I went through various stages of annoyance quite rapidly and, deliberately passing the stage with the excuse of being on the way to the toilet, I quietly suggested he should back off. Quietly he muttered in return something on the likes of "don't worry about it mate" and gave me a reassuring look, like he knew he'd gone too far and was about to back off.

However, while I was in the bogs, he changed his mind and started ripping the piss out of That Bloke In The Lav instead, getting big laughs out of what I might be up to in there.

Fuck that. I came out and looked him in the eye all the way up - I was never going to hit him or anything, but I wasn't going to hide.

Here's the thing: in the time it took me to take the few steps to Being Within Range I became very aware of how much On His Side the fairly packed room was, and I'll admit that it was increasingly intimidating. The room wanted him to rip me to bits, in fact they were really hoping he would, and I felt absolutely lost for the right way to react. I mumbled something along the lines of 'whydunyoufaggoff', with a slight smile, but he was just about to play a record, and did, and the moment passed.

Weird as f**k: everyone who was in our party at the time was convinced afterwards that *I* had completely fazed *him*. They were all certain that there'd been this exchange of banter, and that I'd won it. I simply cannot explain that.

But still: crowd mentality - f**ked up, eh?
