Trains are functional

They get you from A to B. If this wasn't the case then why are France and Germany always trying to make them quicker? There is nothing inherently enjoyable about a train trip; I don't buy any of this 'great experience, views, reading (??)' rubbish. As often as not, they are packed, stinky and ridiculously over-priced. If you really want to see a country, talk to people etc, then hitchhike. Especially if you're only going to Italy.
