I think you'll find Roeder did try to keep him here

but for gods sake have some respect for dublin, an absolute legend. You cannot say he can't be ALLOWED to retire. He has broken his neck, leg, to be honest it's a wonder he carried on at all after that. Yes I am really upset that he is going. Yes, I will miss him and no, I don't think he can ever really be replaced, he is a player from a different era. But huge respect for a man who is a great role model and a fantastic player and true gentleman. If he wanted to coach then Roeder would have bitten his hand off for the chance to keep him here. But it has to be his choice, and he clearly wants to go into commentating. It is best he leaves now, rather than clinging on, playing the odd game here and there but spending more and more time on the bench, and probably dropping to play for lower league clubs. Respect him for his choice. He is tired, and his body just isn't up to the level of play that he would want. He has been amazing, one of the only people I really look up to, but let him go.
