Mac OS X has an automatic update thingy so it does pop up from time to time; but you can ignore it or close it until *you* are ready to install the updates.

To be fair, though, Windows is such a badly programmed heap of s**t it has to have regular updates and nag you until you install them otherwise your PC would be part of a virus/spam pushing botnet before you've finished reading this sentence.
