That story unravelled pretty damn quickly precisely because the immediate official story didn't tally with the actual evidence. So far as I can tell there is no evidence existing anywhere except in Fayed's head that there was anything suspicious about his son's death, rather the evidence is entirely consistent with the official story.

There *are* conspiracies and cover-ups (still the government wont admit they lied about WMD although it's pretty much established that they did) and it's good to be skeptical; but don't see conspiracy where none exists just because you mistrust all authority (as I do). Sometimes they actually tell the truth.
