I felt something possible missing as I prepared to go into "Netto" earlier in the week to take advantage of their Cheap Lager For Buttons offer, whereby in exchange for some small change and plastic trouser buttons they will give you Cheap Lager, in my case a couple of cases of 1664 for about £0.12p.

Anyhoo, as I parked the chariot in the car park, as far away from all the rusty L-reg Sierras and Novas as I could manage, I found myself reflecting that, were I a catholic, I'd be able to cross myself before entering, in the hope that it might afford me some protection against the evils therein. But as an atheist, I had nothing but my own wits, class and standards to protect me.

Harrowing it most certainly was, and not an experience I'm keen to repeat any time soon, but it's left me even more convinced that my godless existence is right for me: if I can come through that on my own, I can beat anything.
