Spoilers as to what happened in that episode and why.

Two words: Writers Strike. This was the last episode finished before it so they needed to end on a proper cliffhanger not just "What will the captain do".

Coincidentally the two shooting victims had told the producers shortly before that they'd signed on to do some other stuff. Actor who plays Karl is guaranteed 6 months in a big New York Broadway production, which despite taking him away from the snatch of the awesome Alex is probably better money and will better raise his acting profile.

Rousseau was off to film in Europe for two months. She was done before the strike finished. Wonder if she'll end up surviving the shooting, after all, we've been due a Rousseau flashback episode since ages!
