ouch

It's been some years since Delia Smith was last on television. Sadly, the woman who inspired so many of us to take up cooking (or at least take up watching cookery programmes) seems to have lost her marbles.

Her new series last night found her trying to get people to cook by any means necessary, even using "readymade ingredients" - ie, readymade by the supermarket.

Delia's big new discovery was frozen supermarket potato in the form of frozen potato wedges, frozen rostis and frozen mashed potato hockey pucks.

She used frozen potato to make bread, to make summer soup, even to make "frozen mashed potato chocolate cake."

I know we can't all be Jamie Oliver and grow our own vegetables, or keep a pet tramp in the shed to look after our own herb garden.

But even I can boil carrots and grating your own cheese really isn't that time-consuming.

A Peruvian dish - comprising a bag of frozen potato wedges, red peppers and cottage cheese - looked like someone had puked up a pizza.

Worst of all was a shepherd's pie consisting of a can of tinned minced beef ("75 per cent meat") that looked like dog food.

"Dare I say, easy as pie," trilled Delia. Dare I say, as revolting as f***?
