Now that talk of the play-offs has finally gone

I'm afraid it's time to take stock and be realistic.

Glenn Roeder has (barring disasters of Grant-like proportions) achieved the first part of what he was appointed to do - i.e keep us in this league.

In doing so he has rid the club of some rubbish and been forced to fill gaps with short-term loans, and perhaps overdone that (Gibbs, Henry). But he has, most would agree, done very well.

Unfortunately the season is now pretty dead and we have to wait to see what he can do when it comes to building a team. When he was appointed people from various places said of his previous management that he was very good AT FIRST in most of the jobs he's had but that longer -term he failed to deliver. Well we will have to wait and see, I think, and for the moment just be grateful.

It does look like he has a decent coaching team in place (barring GK) and is a sensible, intelligent man whom the board are prepared to back (though, of course, the proof of that remains to be seen.)

It's going to be a long job, though, and I don't think we should expect too much too soon; the latter part of the Worthington era and the Grant disaster left a great deal of repair work to be done - why, for example, are the only decent players to come from our Academy goalkeepers?

My main worry is that if Roeder needs, say, three years and during that time he is offered a Premier job (let's face it if Megson can get back in then almost anyone can!) would he take it?
