We'd all buy tickets, turn up to watch the game in a sell-out crowd, then

most of us would discover that neither team really exists.

The referee and officials would ignore this fact and carry on whistling, awarding free-kicks and so on until half time. The stadium announcer would continue to provide commentary for the imaginary match despite most of the crowd screaming for their money back. Meanwhile, a small minority of the spectators would be complaining at the former group to sit down as they couldn't see the game.
