You'd have to be a bit naive to take any single story at face value, imo ...

There are that many contradictory thoeries, versions of history, so many different commentators that have a vested interest in telling one side of a story and not the other.

However, you can't dismiss it all out of hand - certainly Berenger Sauniere had access to some kind of secret knowledge or documentation or both. Certainly someone gave him a fantastic amount of money for one reason or another, Reinne le Chateau (sp?) is evidence enough of that.
