How the hell materazzi's first was a yellow considering everything else in the game

The Viera thing at the end didn't have time to materialise, but Carragher and someone else went round winding him up, then the next time he had the ball someone floored him, pre meditated and looking to get him to react, yet the ref saw it all and ignored it

I don't mind if it's level and everyones allowed to do it, but why just victimise one player so early on and throw a red?
