Well for one thing
In nearly every state the public can only vote in either the Republican or Democrat primary/caucus. In any case, using those results to decide the election would make it much less democratic as the vote would be divided between so many candidates that their mandate would be non-existent. And lastly, in the American system one doesn't vote for a presidential candidate, but for a presidential elector, which change the result (cf. Al Gore in 2000).
