Mediawatch was pleased to read a couple of weeks ago that Manchester City would be wearing a specially-designed kit devoid of sponsorship for the upcoming Manchester derby, that coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Munich air crash.

'City will wear a special kit incorporating a black ribbon with their sponsor's branding removed to reflect their own involvement in the tragedy, which claimed the life of goalkeeper Frank Swift, who played for the club from 1933 to 1949' - UEFA.com, January 10.

Unfortunately United themselves couldn't quite bring themselves to give two fingers to the corporate man, after a huge banner appeared on the side of Old Trafford, plastered with the logo of AIG, the club's main shirt sponsor:

'Each group has chosen to pay tribute in its own way. It is entirely appropriate that a partner as closely involved with the club as AIG would want to remember that extraordinary team, cut down in its prime,' offered a whimpering club statement.

Good to see that the memory of the 23 who died in 1958 is not being sullied in any way by any tacky publicity seekers.
