One Synagogue which was restored and active was closed, but the caretaker let us in and

that was an experience. First of all I got bollocked for taking my hat off and then he spent an hour telling us the whole wartime history of the Synagogue (the Germans had made the ultimate insult of using it as a stable for their horses). Well, I say us, but he spoken only in Polish and directly to me, not even casting a glance at the beautiful girl I was with, even though she was translating his every word!

All I could understand was the word "Niemcy" he kept repeating (German). She started laughing and I heard her say "Nie, Anglieski" or something similar and then he suddenly looked surprised and embarrassed. Apparently she'd been translating politely, as he thought I was German and had been trying to give me the guilt trip the whole way through :-)
