I'm way out of touch, but...

Schwartze Cafe on Kantstrasse is really good and 100 Biere (Monumenten Strasse or something). All the Irish bars are rubbish except Oscar Wilde and then only for football and a Sunday lunch or fry up.

But East Berlin is the place to go. Mitte is somewhat touristy these days, but still a few good bars dotted around. Prenzlauerberg's had it's day really, but around Kollwitzplatz are several good bars and restaurants (one on the corner does excellent German food, but I've forgotten the name...) Freidrichshein is where the most interesting bars are these days (or so I'm told), but a bit of a trek for a couple of days.
